Salute The Suit

by Sitara Kanhai

Let's be honest. For some of us, wearing a suit means a wedding or a business interview. Then there are those who ditch the thought of even wearing one! Luckily, for the past decade, suits have become the all-embracing, all-around attire for men. Which means, lots more options, less complications, and more simplicity. But, before you jump to spend, there are just a few tips and tricks that every man should know!

1. Solar Shades
For daywear, especially during spring and summer months, suits of the lighter shades are generally more complimentary. These include tan, grey, and soft browns. No need to be weary of venturing beyond the typical "black" suit. Lighter colors can appear more fashionable without losing your standard for your physical presentation.

2. As the Solar Fades
When nightlife approaches, the business and social life environment changes. So, why shouldn't we? Take advantage. Your "black suit" safety zone can now expand into other dark shades such as burgundy, charcoal grey, and deep browns. Here's a tip: Black shoes with dark colored suits. This leaves more options for shirt/tie color.

3. The Business Man
Blue. Need I say more? Pin stripes. Yes, a plus. It speaks professionalism, sophistication and has been the traditional color for such things as business meetings, board meetings, and work.

4. Stripes..Solids..Pool anyone?
Before you shoot and scratch, first make the choice of whether you prefer a solid tie to a patterned shirt or vice versa. This will make it easier to coordinate. Striped shirts scream solid ties. If you must, go nowhere beyond a simple paisley tie.

5. Belt It Out
Even though belts may go by as the unnoticed accessory, truth is that they can do as much harm as good to your suit. Matching your belt and shoes is a recommended start. However, if you have a special taste for unusual colored shoes, keep your belt color along the lines of your suit color.

These guidelines are not written in stone. But, they are a smart start to a sharp dressed man. Remember, there are endless combinations when putting together a suit. Keep in mind your function, your style, and your look and those traits will give you access to a whole new world of suits.

Fashion History Fact of the Month
In the 1930's to late 1940's, the "Zoot Suit" was a symbolic style for men, mainly in the jazz culture. These suits were easily distinguished by their wide-legged, high-waisted and long coat design. Dick Tracy, the iconic comic strip detective, wore the famous yellow Zoot Suit.
